The Barclays Bank, Ghana Limited has donated Laptop Computers to twenty (20) Students of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa who are on the Bank’s Scholarship Scheme at a brief ceremony at the University. According to Mr Ebenezer Arko, the Tarkwa Branch Manager of Barclays Bank, the donation was part of their Shared Growth Ambition programme. He indicated that the Laptops were to aid the students in their studies so that they would grow up to become meaningful members of society. He further said that the scholarship scheme was initiated to empower the students to become ready for the job market and to build their capacity especially those who would want to become entrepreneurs after graduating from the University. He said the Bank will soon roll out a programme in the University to give students entrepreneurial skills and financial literacy after which they would be given certificates.
The scholarship package targets only Ghanaian needy but brilliant students from year 200 to year 400 and includes the full payment of their tuition fees, the laptop and food subsidy. According to Mr Arko, the package, which is renewable for every academic year, also covers stationery, hostel and academic facility user fees.
